Parker County is to the west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area directly adjacent to Tarrant County. It is bordered by Tarrant County to the east, Wise County to the north, Jack County to the northwest, Palo Pinto County to the west, Hood County to the south, and Johnson County to the southeast. The county has a total area of 910 square miles broken by Brazos River and Trinity River tributaries. Parker County is 82.6 percent white, 1.7 percent Black, 13.0 percent Hispanic, 0.7 percent Asian, 1.0 percent other, and 1.8 percent two or more races.
The county seat of Parker County is Weatherford, which is about one hour from Dallas and about 30 minutes from Fort Worth. Major highways in Parker County include Interstate 20 (I-20), Interstate 30 (I-30), U.S. Highway 180 (US 180), U.S. Highway 377 (US 377), Farm to Market Road 5 (FM 5), Farm to Market Road 51 (FM 51), Farm to Market Road 52 (FM 52), Farm to Market Road 113 (FM 113), State Highway 171 (SH 171), State Highway 199 (SH 199), State Highway 312 (SH 312), and Farm to Market Road 920 (FM 920).
As of the 2010 census, Parker County’s population was 116,927 after being 88,495 in the 2000 census, 64,785 in 1990, 44,609 in 1980, and 33,888 in 1970. The county is named after Isaac Parker, who served during the Texas Revolution as a member of Elisha Clapp’s company of rangers, and represented Houston County in the House of the Third, Fourth, Sixth, and Seventh congresses (1838–40 and 1841–43), and was a senator for the District of Houston, Nacogdoches, and Rusk in the Eighth and Ninth congresses (1843–45). He was also a member of the Convention of 1845, was a senator in the first four terms of the Texas legislature (1846–53), and represented Ellis and Tarrant counties in the House in 1855–56, at which time he introduced the bill to establish Parker County.
